As the title states, my friend that lives and works in Nanjing is coming to stay in my apartment in Shanghai for two nights. I know he can do the temporary registration online, but is that all he needs to do? Do we need to go in person to the local PSB?

Temporary registration online should suffice. I heard the online platform does not always work. If he cannot register online successfully, then visit the police station that your apartment compound is assigned to(not PSB) – your apartment compound management office will know which police station.
You can also double check with the management office if there are any extra requirements for a guest visiting from another province – e.g. they might wanna see your friend’s health code
